This is a recent painting of my daughter.  As a woman who has children who are young adults, it’s a disorienting time to parent. While I usually focus on my own perspective as a mother who is learning to let go and release as my children age (which is a considerable struggle because it comes with doubt and fear and worry and power shifts and personal rejection) 
In this piece I see her as a whole independent being- with a life ahead, full of vitality, energy, naivety and potential, poised to leap, with tension running through her form.   Beautiful and brilliant,  it’s easy to slip into the past and see myself/ourselves as younger people, and remember what it is like to be this age. It’s startling to see versions of ourselves in our children even as we relinquish authority and influence, and often while grappling with who we were and have become.
